THE RACE SO FAR...
The success of The Bob Champion Cancer Trust in the research field owes much to our policy of rapid assessment for funding of carefully selected research projects, thereby opening the way to early investigation of any potential advances in treatment.

1986 - The Bob Champion Cancer Research Unit within the royal Marsden NHS Trust Hospital at Sutton, Surrey was opened. Through the Research Unit, the trust has supported research into:

  • the frequency of cancer

  • hereditary aspects of cancer within families

  • the testing of high dose chemo-therapy treatments with bone marrow transplant

  • the fertility of patients after treatment

  • reducing the side effects from radiotherapy

  • targetting tumour cells and investigating tumour growth rate

  • psychological support for cancer patients

1992 - The Bob Champion Lounge - a special leisure area, for those re-quiring long term in-patient care, was opened.

2000 - The Bob Champion Research Centre for Urological Cancers was opened in conjunction with the insitute of Cancer Research - the first male dedicated cancer research facility in Europe.

  • THE RACE ISN'T OVER YET...

With the building now finished, scientists have already moved into the new laboratories to begin setting up their specialised research programmes. The focus of the research will be improving prevention, early detection, and treatment of prostate and testicular cancers. Until recently, research on these male cancers was relatively limited.

However, at the new laboratories, scientists will be working hard to identify the cancer "genes" that lead to prostate and testicular cancer. One team is headed by Dr. Richard Wooster, responsible for cloning the BrCa2 breast cancer gene, who will be working with me to identify genes that could be useful in controlling prostate cancer. A second team, led by Dr. Ros Eeles, will be dedicated to researching a genetic test that could help to identify individuals at high risk of devloping prostate cancer.

The new Centre still has the space for more research teams - and raising funds to recruit an additional team is now one of our urgent goals. We need £1 million to fund a research programme which will investigate improved diagnosis and treatment for those suffering from prostate cancer. On behalf of everyone here at the centre, thank you for any help you can give to assist our research programme.

If you have always wanted to organise an event, but weren't too sure how to go about it, why not speak to Kate and you can chat about some possibilities. It doesn't matter how small or large the event, we will be there to offer advice and give you all the support you need. If you're interested - make that call!
