It was 1979 and I was riding high in my career. Then came the news that no one wants to hear - I had cancer in two parts of my body and possibly only a few months to live. The dream that kept me going through the long months of chemotherapy, was that one day I might win the Grand National on Aldaniti.
Against all the odds, in 1981 my dream came true. Not only did I win a very public victory in the Grand National, but also a very personal victory against cancer.
I rode that race for all the people suffering from cancer and for all the people that care for them. My only wish is that my winning shows them, there is always hope and that all battles can be won. I just hope it will encourage others to face their illness with fresh spirit.
Following the Grand National, the interest and support generated by my triumph over adversity, led to the foundation of The Bob Champion Cancer Trust in 1983.
Since then much has been achieved by the Trust and its work continues to give hope and inspiration to thousands of men affected by cancer each year.
But there is still much to do. I hope you can support us in a race of a lifetime.

The Bob Champion Cancer Trust is funding a research project in the laboratory of Professor Colin Cooper. Colin comes from Swaffham in Norfolk. He obtained his first degree at the University of Warwick and has trained at the National Institute of Health and at the Dana Farber Institute in the USA. Colin and his laboratory have been responsible for identifying cancer genes involved in the development of sarcomas, kidney cancer and, bladder cancer. These discoveries have underpinned the development of specific molecular tests for individual cancer types including synovial sarcoma. |
